Bohemia Handmade In Marrakech

At Bohemia, we place great value in the handmade
perfectly imperfect wares crafted slowly
from natural materials that are locally sourced.
with the nuances and eccentricities integral to each piece.
The Barnnet introduces Bohemia basket bags
made by hand by artisans throughout Morocco.

These traditional Moroccan Reed Baskets are handwoven using natural reeds and finished with sturdy sisal handles.

Versatile and lightweight, these nesting baskets are great for home storage, as decorative planters or for carrying freshly picked flowers from the garden.

The Creative Process / Moroccan Baskets

Consisting of a close-knit team in the historic port region of Leith in Edinburgh, we work with creative partners all over the world to produce collections that are made to last, affordable and sustainable. Every product is thoughtfully designed and crafted, with each order handled personally and with care. One of our favourite and best selling products, the humble basket is as old as humankind. The weaving of natural plant fibres to create a vessel for the storage and transport of food, clothing, seeds and all manner of goods, makes baskets both eco-friendly and supremely practical.

Working collaboratively with artisans in Morocco, India, Kenya and Türkiye we produce timeless collections of beautiful, functional objects. Gaining a deep understanding of the techniques and processes of each craft is fundamental to our design process and we spend many many hours in the company of our partners quietly observing in awe of their skills.

Our role is to act as a bridge between traditional crafting communities and an audience who value authentic goods sustainably produced. With a designer's eye and over 20 years of experience in this field, we work together with makers to update patterns and forms, introduce contemporary colour palettes, and focus on the finer details to create a fusion between age-old tradition and modernity.

The Creative Process / Moroccan Baskets

At Bohemia, we place great value in the handmade; perfectly imperfect wares crafted slowly from natural materials that are locally sourced. Goods made by hand bear the character of their creator with the nuances and eccentricities integral to each piece. We yearn for meaning in our lives, and the connection felt in owning a unique item made using centuries old techniques by an individual human being has increasing value in our fast-paced world.

As a company, our aim is to champion the status of artisanal craft and those who produce it. We believe in fair trade and our relationships are built on trust, respect, equality and friendship. In Marrakech we have established our own workshops to improve the living and working conditions of our partners. We aim to provide beautifully made, hand-crafted objects that are ethical, authentic, and sustainable.

There is a huge variation in materials and weaving techniques, each characteristic of the country and region in which they are made. The range of baskets we produce is vast, from traditional palm leaf baskets finished with simple sisal handles, to fun boho style baskets adorned with colourful wool pompoms and tassels.

We spend many hours in the company of artisans on our regular trips to Morocco and can often be found in the workshops of our basket weavers designing and discussing new samples and sharing conversation over a glass of sweet mint tea.
